Three Signs You’re Ready to Look for a New Job

In Job Search Tips and Tricks

Making the leap to new employment can be scary—especially if you’ve been with your current company for a while. You may feel you’re not completely happy at work, but it’s become familiar to you. The unknown can be stressful and the grass is not always greener. You may think to yourself, “Maybe I’ll just stay put and everything will be OK.”

Should I stay or should I go?

Sometimes, a new job can make a huge difference in your life. It all depends on the severity of what you’re experiencing at your current job. The following three signs are red flags it’s time to move on:

  • Your health is suffering. If you work as part of a skeleton crew and have unreasonable daily demands, or if your job is very high stress, you may have noticed some health concerns. Weight gain, weight loss, stress, anxiety, high blood pressure and other symptoms can all be caused by your work situation. If you’ve noticed your doctor telling you it’s time to make a change—or if you’re just tired of feeling unhappy to the point of being unhealthy—it may be time to heed the warning signs.
  • You’re unhappy every single day. If you don’t like what you do, don’t get along with co-workers or your boss, or don’t fit into your corporate culture—you may find yourself unhappy daily. You can’t get out of bed on time, drag your feet getting into the office, can’t quite get started at the beginning of your shift, can’t focus … these may all sound familiar. And if they do, the opportunity to make a career change (even if it causes you a little initial stress) can make a world of difference in the long run.
  • You’re just plain bored. Maybe you’ve hit a glass ceiling of sorts in your present job. There’s just nowhere else to go and no chance to try something new. Or maybe you’re just tired of your industry and aren’t sure you’d want to move around to a different role even if it was available. Subtle signs of boredom include an inability to focus, a lack of passion, depleted creativity and diminishing output. Simply put, you can’t quite convince yourself to care anymore. If this sounds familiar, your brain may need a change of pace.
